The Proposition 73 Trojan Horse initiative on abortion

On the surface, it might seem so reasonable: requiring parental notification before a minor can abort a pregnancy.

But what if the parent is responsible for the girl's pregnancy? Not every family is right out of The Brady Bunch, or even Gilmore Girls.

Did you know that the proposition amends the California constitution? Did you know that it defines a fetus as "an unborn child"? Do you know what the implications of that would be?

I am not a Californian, but let's face it: This could have implications for women's equality and equal protection nationwide. Ariki Art has a good run-down:

LA Times published a poll this morning that indicates that Prop 73 (the so-called "Parental Notification initiative") will pass narrowly. Here's the synopsis of Proposition 73 from the Secretary of State's website. All I have heard in the media about this Proposition is that it concerns the requirement of parental notification when a minor is seeking an abortion. No one talks of this as an amendment to the CA constitution, which it is, and one that will change the definition of abortion to infanticide, which it will.

Somehow I don't find it all that surprising that he-man groper Schwarznegger is in favor of what he must see as the just and proper entitlements of patriarchy.

Let's also remember that the big backers behind this initiative are the same people who want pharmacists to be able to play doctor and refuse to fill birth control prescriptions even for married women, the same people who see pregnancy as punishment for having sex. (How's that for valuing life -- babies are "punishment"!)

Californians, know what you're really voting for.

I just read the "bad babies" thread and it is funny that the logic behind the anti-choice movement is pregnancy is your sentence for sex and that babies are born bad (which must come from bad parents). Shouldn't they be worried that those bad babies will grow up to be bad adults and be unleashed on society? Just thinking out loud here.

Pregnancies show that men are potent and potency is the most important value to men (large penises, viagra). somehow I feel that the true fight for reproductive rights lies in figuring out how to comfort men and raise their self-esteem elsewhere, so that controlling women's lives isn't their main initiative.

One of the hosts on KGO Radio pointed it out a few days ago that he was ready to vote yes on Propostion 73, until he read the fine print. He called it a Trojan Horse - one that could come back and threaten the Stem Cell initiative already voted on by California voters.
