Schools

I lived in East Asia for a time and I can tell you: the schools in places like Taiwan, Japan and Singapore are vastly better and more demanding than U.S. schools. These are some of the best, if not the best, public schools in the world. Schools in Europe, by and large, are way ahead of U.S. schools, as well. As for the reasons why: well, I think a lot of it is you get what you pay for. U.S. school teachers have one of the lowest paid jobs in our society. That's not the case elsewhere in the First World (teachers in Germany, for example, make as much as doctors).
