Deep down, part of the fear of republicans is that they are going to lose control of America forever or that they will be forced to pander to the poor. It is probably true that the masses would never support republicans in their current issues stance. Therefore suppression of the masses is healthy to the conservative cause. I must admit myself that I don't much like making it too easy for the ignorant to vote. I certainly don't want illegals voting either.
