Pope won't apologize; Islamic militants vow murder [updated]
Such is the clarity in the realm of religious fundamentalists.
On the one hand, we have Pope Benedict XVI, the former Hitler youth, who, in quoting Manuel Paleologos II, a 14th century Byzantine emperor, said:
Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.
Just lovely. You gotta love religious tolerance from the pre-eminent religious leaders of the world.
On the other hand, you have insecure gangbangers with an over-abundance of testosterone, the Mujahadeen Army, who take issue with the "sword" remark by promising suicide attacks on the Vatican, and other promises of general murder and mayhem to
shake your thrones and break your crosses in your home.
On the West Bank, Islamic zealots demonstrated their peaceful intentions by tossing firebombs at churches. Never mind that they were Anglican and Greek Orthodox churches. Any Christian church will do, right?
Such is the latest in the realm of religion.
Update: Apparently now the Pope has indeed apologized.
"... I am deeply sorry for the reactions in some countries to a few passages of my address at the University of Regensburg, which were considered offensive to the sensibility of Muslims," he told pilgrims at his Castelgandolfo summer residence.
What a mensch.
Update: Meanwhile, an Italian nun in her 70s was gunned down in Mogadishu. Whether this was another statement by militants upset at not being regarded as forces of good in the world -- if only by a 14th century Byzantine emperor -- is apparently not clear at this time.
