"Pro-life": The fiscal argument
No, this is not a joke. Just check out this bit of cold calculus:
Politicians who insist that judicial nominees pass the pro-baby- killing litmus test also claim that President Bush exaggerates the Social Security crisis.
These liberal phonies also refuse to acknowledge the obvious connection between abortion and the Social Security crisis. Of the 48 million or more babies murdered in the U.S. since Roe v. Wade, more than 32 million would now be age 20 or older, contributing to our gross national product, paying income taxes and FICA taxes.
So there you have it. The real beef is with Social Security -- you know, that gubmint program that helps keep lazy, worthless old people out of poverty.
There's some simplistic rationale behind this:
Abortion violates the right to life, a condition upon which all our other liberties depend. In addition to the evil of murder, abortion has disrupted personal, family and societal values, and caused great pain and other complications to mothers who have aborted their children.
It's hard to know where to start here. Maybe with the 52%+ of the human population that are female, and who supposedly have a right to life, too. The author, one Vern J. Simon, doesn't seem to be too concerned about any of that. He's on a roll.
We wonder why our society has become so violent, a problem of massive proportions, while we close our eyes to the mass murder which is a root cause of our decay.
That's interesting. And here I thought that violent crime was a result of a rape culture, a gun culture, a popular culture that fetishizes violence ... not to mention poverty, untreated drug addiction, and the still-dark secret of child abuse.
Democrat Lyndon Johnson and his Democrat-controlled Congress took Social Security from its independent trust fund and put it in the general fund where politicians of the same ilk continue to spend it and waste it to perpetuate their power over the poor.
Well, I'm not so sure Mr. Vern wants to be bringing up fiscal irresponsibility, considering that only two presidents presided over paying down the national debt that we've had since WW2 -- Clinton and Carter. On the other hand, Reagan, Bush the Elder and Bush the Lesser are responsible for the vast majority of the national debt.
But, as the right-wing zealots are wont to do, they blame their messes on people who haven't been in office for years or even decades.
Really, LBJ is responsible for the fucked up national finances we have now? Puhleeez!
Even with Social Security heading toward bankruptcy, today's politicians want to spend it on 16 million illegal immigrants, and counting.
Yes, a little racist xenophobia never hurts one's argument when appealing to the lizard brain.

In Freakonomics, economist Steven Levitt argues that legalizing abortion in 1973 led to a rapid decline in violent crime rates in the 1990s.
Go figure.
They don't like facts when their minds are made up. It would ruin their day.
