When it comes to government, it helps that the leaders believe in it (government)

After decades of hearing from (mostly) Republicans how evil government is, how government does nothing but cause problems, it's quite interesting now how they try to blame the workers on the ground, the victims themselves and (of course) their usual scapegoats, "liberals," for the horrific failure of government to do government's jobs in this time of crisis.

Is it all that surprising? After all, we have people who don't believe in government running the government. Kind of like having an Amish auto mechanic, a Vegan BBQ chef or a tea-to-taller wine critic.

Meanwhile, the Democrats, who've been kind of shapeless, spineless and vision-less over the past several years, seem to have a clear picture of what people of common sense see as necessary right now:

  • Ensuring health care for all displaced victims
  • Getting victims housing
  • Getting victims to family members and friends
  • Getting students into school
  • Getting victims cash to meet other basic needs
  • Providing financial relief to victims and National Guard
  • Disaster victims filing for bankruptcy should be treated differently under the bankruptcy code in recognition of their particular hardship.

And let's not forget:

Requiring accountability:

At a news conference, Pelosi, D-Calif., said Bush's choice for head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency had "absolutely no credentials."

She related that she had urged Bush at the White House on Tuesday to fire Michael Brown.

"He said 'Why would I do that?'" Pelosi said.

"'I said because of all that went wrong, of all that didn't go right last week.' And he said 'What didn't go right?'"

"Oblivious, in denial, dangerous," she added.

Sadly, I read this and the first thing that came to mind is a Bushian response of "why, it's not like they had before the hurricane?"
