Essential NARAL reading
Because these women are much more eloquent and insightful, I direct you, gentle reader, to these posts:
I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, the fuss over it is a distraction from the real issue--I am almost reluctant to blog this, having said that I did not intend to talk about the ad any more, but I figured that having blogged both the ad and their response to "fact"check's response, I should. On the other hand, whatever the merits or flaws of the ad may have been--and I believe that, while factual in a strict sense, it was somewhat misleading, although I also believe that misleading ads are the name of the game in politics, so I find it frankly hypocritical for the right to be bitching about it, and rather disappointing that political sites on the left are so uninterested in defending it--I seriously wonder if any ad that NARAL runs isn't going to be a flashpoint for controversy.
They planted the seed. And enough doubt is growing to fire up the debate. NARAL got so much free publicity off an ad they didn't run - and it is pure genius. It makes me proud to say that I volunteered for NARAL in college.
Politics is a dirty job, but the Democrats have rolled over and played dead for far too long. Before the NARAL commercial, I thought John Roberts was a done deal, but now I'm not so sure.
Thoughts of an Average Woman (via Roxanne):
This is an issue that will not go away, and many, many progressive women and men will not stand to have their reproductive rights used as "cannon fodder", given away by other "dem" men as a bargining chip.
The fact of the matter is, whether you like it or not, Roberts work against women's rights and in support of violent offenders did happen. It is a part of his history, and no one, not even Karl Rove, can wipe that away.
Pseudo-Adrienne (@ Echnidne of the Snakes):
Which is worse? NARAL doing something we don't like and us attacking each other about it, and splintering as a movement? Or forgetting all about the threat of Roberts on the bench and him even getting there with relative ease because we were too busy quibbling amongst ourselves (and with NARAL) to actually raise a protest against him? It's Roberts who we should be going after relentlessly, not NARAL. Focus.
Jessica cuts the crap and makes it very clear why it is that the big boys are tripping over themselves to marginalize the basic rights of half the population. Thanks to her for doing it, because I was fixing to point out that there is a distinct strain of "chicks up front" thinking going on here. (And for those who were gonna skip the link, being "up front" isn't a good thing--it means putting female bodies in between the male protesters and the cops to protect the men.)
Lauren (@ Feministe), with links to some excellent articles.
Now I really need to get back to work.
