Website changes

Some announcements about changes in the site (after the jump).

Well, it seems the spammers have discovered this site, so I've had to take the first of several measures available to stop this -- requiring registration to post comments for now. Once I have a few moments to spare, I will be upgrading some modules, including the spam filter. Until then, this will have to do.

Also, thanks to the unreliable nature of my Mac (yes, I managed to get it to see the hard drive again, don't ask me how as all the Apple-recommended resets and diagnostics didn't do doodlysquat, but I'm going to leave it just for my graphics work now), I'm seeing the site on my 6-year-old Dell with a puny little 800x600 monitor, and realizing that the 3-column structure is perhaps not optimal for this resolution. So, much as I love to utilize all the space on high-res screens, over the next weeks (well, this is the holiday season, after all -- and besides, I have "real" work to do!) I'm going to tinker with set-ups for 2-column display. I'll be doing this with the default theme, "seeingred." I have no idea how this will look with the legacy themes -- as it is, column settings are global -- but once the basic settings seem to be set, I will start working through stylesheets and template files of the other themes to make everything pretty again (at least to my eye).

Thanks for your patience!

[Edited to add:

Well, after some tinkering, I think I can get away with the 3-column layout, which is my preference. With some CSS modifications, the site seems to look okay now, so I'm going to stick with this (which, depending on when you're reading this, may or may not be the same "this" as what I'm talking about). Still, tinkering with the other themes will have to wait. (And, as always, sometimes a post with an oversized graphic or the like can always push things around a bit.) -media girl]
