New Orleans - America Pays the Price for Neglect

America pays

You've accuratly hit on the feelings of many people. I'm so cynical about our leaders that when I saw Bush with two refugees, my only thought was his people told him to do it -- what a great photo op!

I don't turn into religious right rhetoric so if they are indeed defaming New Orleans for having it coming - "they're all on welfare. They deserve it- they were given plenty of time to evacuate. They're all a bunch of homosexuals, anyway. It's a multiculture city - God sent that storm to make a point." I haven't heard it--don't want to hear it--stone the uncaring bigots. Matter of fact all I have heard is people's grief for all people trapped in the situation. That the majority are black and poor only highlights the failing of our government, local, state and federal.

The crime in this situation is that for all the $$$$ tax payers have spent on worst case scenario studies, no one implemented any emergency plans. At least none that were carried out. If they had designated shelters, wouldn't it have made sense to have generators, food, water and medical emergency supplies store-housed there?

While I realize this is the worst natural disaster to hit the U.S. and the sheer number of victims is impossible to absorb, I can't help but think that the lack of planning, the hallmark of the current administration, added to the misery -- just like it did in Iraq. I'm expecting the economy to tank. We'll be paying for our neglect for a long time to come.

Privatized First Responses

Just as an example of what you get when you privatize first responders. Portugal (a small country to the west of Spain in Europe for the undereducated) privatized part of their fire fighting resources because forrest fires had gotten so out of control and the government had been so corrupt they couldn't afford to put more fire fighters out there.

The result? The private firms fighting fires start more fires so they could bill the government for more money. SO now the forest fires in Portugal have gotten completely out of control. Thanks to privatization.

And you don't need to take my word for it.
