Virginia House Bill No. 187

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding a section numbered 54.1-2403.4 as follows:

§ 54.1-2403.4. Prohibition on the provision of certain intervening medical technology for unmarried women.

No individual licensed by a health regulatory board shall assist with or perform any intervening medical technology, whether in vivo or in vitro, for or on an unmarried woman that completely or partially replaces sexual intercourse as the means of conception, including, but not limited to, artifical insemination by donor, cryopreservation of gametes and embryos, invitro fertilization, embryo transfer, gamete intrafallopian tube transfer, and low tubal ovum transfer.

This bill was prefiled on Jan 2nd by R.G. Marshall. Just from the brief info it seems to be along the same lines as the "unauthorized reproduction" bill, that was introduced in Indiana this past October. ::::warning PDF link::: The obvious intent is to bar unmarried women from becoming pregnant by artificial means. The bill will be offered Jan. 11th, so perhaps more detail will be available soon.

I don't see how this bill could even be considered remotely capable of passing constitutional law scrutiny. Discrimination against nonmarried females for no apparent national interest. It is just stupid and a pointless waste of legislative activity. Somebody is just trying to score points with the fringes of their constituency or they are idiots. I hate zealots.

"unmarried woman" is code for lesbian. sure the law will also affect unmarried hetero women, but that's besides the point. in this wingnut's mind, hetero women can always get pregnant the old fashioned way. the whole point of this is to make it illegal for lesbians to get pregnant.

never got intoduced because the legislator who was going to introduce got so much negative response when the word got out that she was going to that she backed off saying: "The issue has become more complex than anticipated and will be withdrawn from consideration by the Health Finance Commission."

So I hope everyone works to get the word out about this bill and to encourage VA residents to let the specific legislator and other members of the VA lege of their disapproval. Also, the negative repsonse got coverage in the Indiana news media which was another important factor.

I am a 27 year old mother of three girls. I have married for nine years. I look at this Bill as a way to control who is allowed to have childern. If for some reason any one of my girls grew up to become attracted to the same gender I would still want them as a big part of my life and for my child to still be able to produce a family. I want grandchildern one day. If this Bill is put into place along with a long list of other reproduction control bills I may not get grandchildern. This is one more way men of power are trying to control women back to the middle ages and even further back in history. As a woman who has been denied surgery with refernce to my reproductive organs I am leading my life in a differnt direction to change the laws men have put into place to tighten their grasp around a womans right to control her own body. I urge all women and men as well to fight and write the Virginia House of delgates to say NO to the conception Bill.
